Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Steelers 43, 49ers 18

Steelers

  • In what is quickly becoming one of the top offenses in the league, all Ben Roethlisberger did was throw for 369 yards and three touchdowns. He’s a top five dynasty quarterback.
  • His favorite target, receiver Antonio Brown, is also making a claim for top dynasty receiver with nine catches for 195 yards and a touchdown.
  • At long last, linebacker Ryan Shazier broke out with 15 tackles and a sack. Shazier was a top IDP pick in rookie dynasty drafts last year but shouldn’t shake the injury bug. Now healthy, Shazier is on his way to LB1 status.

49ers

  • Despite the blowout, quarterback Colin Kaepernick had another solid outing with 335 yards and two touchdowns through the air plus another 51 yards on the ground. It’s the kind of high-end QB2 numbers we’ve wanted from Kaepernick since he burst on the scene.
  • New acquisition Torrey Smith had a big day with six catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. The consistency has always been an issue with Smith but he certainly looked like Kaepernick’s top target. He should be considered a WR4 in dynasty rankings.

Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Panthers 24, Texans 17

Panthers

  • Cam Newton shouldered the load again with 195 yards and two touchdowns through the air and 76 more and a touchdown on the ground. Proving once again, Cam Newton does not need receivers to be successful.
  • Running back Jonathan Stewart had another average day with just 62 yards on 17 carries. It’s hard to tell if Stewart’s lack of production is due to the extra attention in the box thanks to zero outside or deep threats. Either way, Stewart can’t be trusted for more than RB3 value right now.
  • Meanwhile, tight end Greg Olsen did get back on track with six catches for 70 yards. He also paced the rest of the team with 14 targets. Olsen’s production should continue to have a decent floor.

Texans

  • It wasn’t the debut Ryan Mallet was hoping for with just 244 yards on 58 pass attempts plus one touchdown. With little prospects of a major infusion of talent, there’s no reason to keep Mallet on a dynasty roster.
  • The only bright spot was defensive end J.J. Watt’s continued dominance with five tackles, a sack and two passes defended.

Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Buccaneers 26, Saints 19

Buccaneers

  • Quarterback Jameis Winston bounced back from a horrible debut with 207 yards passing and a touchdown along with 23 yards on the ground and another touchdown. This was the kind of performance we expected and it should solidify his status as a QB2 in dynasty rankings.
  • In IDP news, defensive end Jacquies Smith had a big day with three sacks giving him four on the season. The 25-year old has bounced around the league but may have found a place in Tampa and could end up in the DL2 conversation if he keeps these numbers up.

Saints

  • Quarterback Drew Brees turned in another sub-par performance with only 255 yards and a touchdown and an interception. It’s fair to wonder if his physical regression plus the loss of some key weapons has had its effect. He’s in the big group of low-end QB1s in dynasty rankings but you might want to get out while you still can.
  • Another weak performance for running back Mark Ingram with 53 yards on just 16 carries but he did have a touchdown. It’s interesting to remember the hype behind Ingram in the off-season but he can’t be considered more than a borderline RB2/3 in dynasty rankings.

Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Vikings 26, Lions 16

Vikings

  • Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater had another average game with 153 yards and a touchdown but added 21 yards on the ground and another touchdown. No need to abandon ship on Bridgewater yet but hopefully the hype catches up soon.
  • Meanwhile, Adrian Peterson ran wild for 134 yards rushing plus 58 yards receiving. He should continue to be a RB1 in dynasty rankings until he shows he can’t do it.
  • Tight end Kyle Rudolph had another five-catch game with 30 yards and a touchdown. He’ll continue to rise in the dynasty rankings.

Lions

  • Quarterback Matt Stafford had a very Stafford-like game with 286 yards on 53 pass attempts with two touchdowns and an interception. Stafford has clearly played himself out of elite QB1 status in dynasty leagues.
  • Rookie running back Ameer Abdullah had a poor game with nine yards rushing and nine yards receiving on just eight touches. He should still lead the team in carries going forward so he’ll be fine.
  • Receiver Calvin Johnson bounced back with 10 catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. He may not be the elite dynasty receiver he was but he’s still a low-end WR1.

Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Cardinals 48, Bears 23

Cardinals

  • Carson Palmer continues to roll with 185 yards and four touchdowns plus an interception. He continues to provide low-end QB1 numbers and is a high-end QB2 in dynasty rankings. The only drawback is his health or lack thereof.
  • Receiver Larry Fitzgerald had a throwback game with 112 yards on eight catches and three touchdowns. It’s a pretty diverse receiving corps in Arizona with Fitzgerald and John Brown fighting for attention. None of them should be considered more than a WR3 in dynasty rankings.

Bears

  • Running back Matt Forte shows no signs of slowing down with 61 yards rushing plus four catches for 44 yards. He may be spelled more this year but he’s still production RB1 numbers. And with the injuries piling up, Forte is the only playmaker in Chicago.

Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Patriots 40, Bills 32

Patriots

  • Tom Brady continues to be in full-on pissed-off mode, going for 466 yards and three touchdowns. He’s easily a top-end dynasty quarterback despite his age.
  • Running back Dion Lewis continues to roll with 40 rushing yards and a touchdown plus six catches for 98 yards. He’s a low-end RB1 in PPR re-draft leagues but his status beyond this year is in doubt.
  • Receiver Julian Edelman continues to dominate the targets with 19, resulting in 11 catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns. He’s a solid WR2 in dynasty PPR leagues.
  • Tight end Rob Gronkowski did his thing with seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. He’s in a league of his own among tight ends and one of the top five dynasty players overall.

Bills

  • Running back LeSean McCoy had a good, not great game with 89 yards plus three catches for 27 yards. He might be a RB1 this year but not much longer. I would trade him while he still has value.
  • Quarterback Tyrod Taylor also had a good game although it was mostly in garbage time with 242 passing yards, three touchdowns but three interceptions. He also added 43 yards on the ground with a touchdown. This was a QB1 day but the question will be if he can keep it up over the whole season.
  • Receiver Sammy Watkins led the team in targets with eight, finishing with six catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. It’s a solid effort but more like WR3 numbers instead of WR1 like Watkins was expected to produce.

Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Bengals 24, Chargers 19

Bengals

  • Quarterback Andy Dalton threw for just 214 yards but three touchdowns. Dalton is one of the rare touchdown-depending quarterbacks and will always be a QB2 in dynasty rankings.
  • Running back Gio Bernard had 123 rushing yards on 20 carries after filling in for starter Jeremy Hill. Bernard still has value as a RB3 in PPR league whether Hill is injured or not.
  • Tight end Tyler Eifert continues his breakout season with four catches for 49 yards and a touchdown. He’s already at TE1 in dynasty rankings but could elevate top-tier by the end of the season.

Chargers

  • Quarterback Philip Rivers had a decent day with 241 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. It’s low-end QB1 numbers.
  • Rookie running back Melvin Gordon had 88 yards on 16 carries which is a lot more like it. He’ll continue to be the first and second down back so his production could be limited by lack of touchdown opportunities.
  • Meanwhile, Danny Woodhead had six catches for 68 yards 36 on the ground. It remains to be seen if his role will be affected by Antonio Gates absence but, if not, Woodhead will continue to be a RB2/3 in PPR dynasty rankings.

Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Browns 28, Titans 14

Browns

  • Unlike last week, the Browns offense didn’t look that bad starting with quarterback Johnny Manziel. He finished with 172 yards and two touchdowns. He didn’t do much on the ground but didn’t have to as Cleveland jumped out to a big lead and never looked back.
  • Speaking of running the ball, starter Isaiah Crowell had 72 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. This is more like it from Crowell but he still split carries with rookie Duke Johnson. Expect an even split most of the season with Johnson being the better play.
  • Receiver Travis Benjamin had another big day with three catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Cleveland throws it very little but when they have this season, it’s been to Benjamin. With no other options, he may very well be the top receiver for the Browns which can make him a decent WR4/5.

Titans

  • Rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota had another solid day with 257 yards and two touchdowns plus two fumbles. He hasn’t played the best defenses the last two weeks but the touchdowns are encouraging. He could end up a QB1 by the end of the season.
  • Running back Bishop Sankey came back down to Earth with 42 yards on 12 carries. He’s nothing more than a very low-end RB2, if that, in dynasty rankings.

Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Falcons 24, Giants 20

Falcons

  • Quarterback Matt Ryan went off with 363 yards and a touchdown. More days like this will push him squarely in the top five of dynasty quarterbacks.
  • His favorite receiver, Julio Jones, caught 13 passes for 135 yards on 15 targets. Jones can absolutely make the case for being dynasty’s top receiver.  
  • Rookie pass rusher Vic Beasley had five tackles and a sack in his second career game. It’s a good start for Beasley where he should be considered a DL4 but can easily top out as a DL2.

Giants

  • Despite the close losses, quarterback Eli Manning is still performing well with 292 yards and two touchdowns. He’s probably not a sure-fire QB1 in dynasty rankings but he’s a high-end QB2.
  • As Manning goes, those around him go like running back Shane Vereen. He caught eight balls for 76 yards and ran for 19 more. In PPR leagues, Vereen is a solid RB3.
  • Of course, the top dog in New York is Odell Beckham who turned in a 7/146/1 line today. He’s a top five dynasty option at WR and will be for a while.

Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Redskins 24, Rams 10

Redskins

  • It was a coming out party for rookie running back Matt Jones with 123 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns plus three catches for 23 yards. Good luck keeping him on taxi squads this year as Jones appears to be the clear heir apparent to Alfred Morris next year
  • Tight end Jordan Reed had another solid outing with six catches for 82 yards on six targets. If Reed is healthy, he’ll continue to be a big part of the offense this year and beyond.

Rams

  • It was Tre Mason’s turn as the running back of choice in St. Louis but didn’t do much to impress with only 26 yards on seven carries. For the Rams, they can’t wait for first round pick Todd Gurley to show up here he will be instantly put in the lineup.
  • On the defensive side, linebacker Alec Ogletree racked up 16 tackles. He continues to make big plays and is an ideal LB2 in IDP dynasty leagues.
