Daily Dynasty Update – September 27th

Happy hour is only a few hours away. Oh, and the 49ers look normal again. Who knew running the ball was a recipe for success?

  • Rams running back Isaiah Pead was a healthy scratch last night yet Zac Stacy didn’t have a single carry. Benny Cunningham ended up spelling Daryl Richardson. Apparently just because the Rams had three running backs in the beginning of the season doesn’t mean they had three worth taking in dynasty fantasy. Look for Cunningham on deeper waiver wires.
  • Bucs (now) backup quarterback Josh Freeman would like a trade. I’d also like a million dollars but it won’t happen. Freeman’s cap number is way too big for a backup/middling starter. He’ll be in Tampa until the end of the season and will begin the path of a journeyman quarterback.
  • The Jaguars have officially designated Denard Robinson as a wide receiver. Still won’t matter as Robinson has yet to break out and is on a bad team.
  • Dallas rookie receiver Terrance Williams will get the start Sunday if Miles Austin can’t go. In that offense, the 2nd receiver will get more opportunities than most. Williams is also young and cheap which means he could be in Dallas for a while. He’d be worth a stash in deep dynasty leagues.

Daily Dynasty Update – September 25th

  • Tampa Bay has named Mike Glennon quarterback going forward. Josh Freeman is officially done. If you’re quarterback starved, here’s an in-season option.
  • 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith is headed to rehab and will be out for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, Smith can rebound and return to football very soon.
  • Lions receiver Ryan Broyles will be getting more attention in the wake of Nate Burleson’s injury. He’ll still man the slot in the pass-happy Lions offense and still quite young. He’s on the dynasty radar.
  • Speaking of Detroit, they’ve asked about Cleveland receiver Josh Gordon in a trade. Gordon in the Lions offense would be dynamite. His stock skyrocketed thanks to his big day Sunday but keep an eye on him if the price drops.
  • Patriots receiver Danny Amendola is progressing well. Now would be the time to buy-low from someone tired of Amendola’s injury shenanigans. He is a dynamic player when healthy but that seems to be a 50/50 proposition.

Daily Dynasty Update – August 29th

College football kicks off tonight. Start looking at who might be on your dynasty draft board in 2014. In the meantime…

  • The Raidas’ will alter their offensive scheme to fit quarterback Terrell Pryor’s skills. Typically, altering your scheme when camp is almost over doesn’t work out well. The Raiders may want to watch that South Carolina game tonight.
  • Jets quarterback Geno Smith may get the start in Week 1, dashing any taxi squad chances for dynasty owners. It’s anybody’s guess who this will turn out.
  • Browns running back Trent Richardson has another year under his belt with his underrated offensive line. T-Rich is in for a big year and should be a running back stud for years.

Not much news heading into the last week of pre-season. Giddy up.

Daily Dynasty Update – August 27th

Almost to that three-day weekend ya’ll.

  • MJD looks like he’s good to go this year in Jacksonville. He is coming off injury but that hasn’t stopped him before.
  • While Houston running back Arian Foster appears ready to go for Week 1, this will be a make-or-break year for Foster dynasty owners. No runner has more carries the last three years and there have been multiple signs of a break down. Dynasty owners should have a contingency plan in place.
  • The fact that Dolphins coaches are talking up Daniel Thomas means little. Lamar Miller is the running back now and, possibly, for years to come.
  • Montee Ball has (finally) been elevated to first team status in Denver’s running game. Keep an eye on it as coach John Fox is known to love committees (see: Williams, DeAngelo; Stewart, Jonathan) but Ball may have more early impact that previously thought.
  • Dallas defensive end Anthony Spencer has been cleared to begin running again. Spencer will be in his first year as a defensive lineman opposite DeMarcus Ware.

Daily Dynasty Update – August 26th

We’re getting closer and closer to the beginning of the season. Let’s see what’s happening down the final stretch.

  • It appears Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball are doing everything they can to NOT start at running back for Denver this year. Neither can pass protect and have had trouble holding on to the ball. Their stock should drop in dynasty drafts this week but Ball still makes a ton of sense long-term.
  • Rob Gronkowski is expected to play most, not all, of this season. However, at just 24, he’s still a top two tight end dynasty pick. The only hesitation would be his injury history, which is getting more  frequent. It’d be ideal to draft Gronk’s current backup, rookie Zach Sudfeld for insurance.
  • Rookie Mike James is officially the #3 running back in Tampa. He’s got some talent but is only worth a taxi squad spot at this point, especially if you have Doug Martin.
  • Oakland appears to be moving on from Matt Flynn and giving Terrelle Pryor a shot at quarterback. Pryor has flashes but, ultimately, won’t be the long-term answer. We fully expect Oakland to be in the mix for the top pick in the NFL draft in 2014 and could take one then.

At least it’s not Monday?

  • The injury bug hit Jamaal Charles on Monday. He went down with a foot sprain but looks fine. The fantasy world probably won’t be comfortable until he sees game action.
  • Receiver DeSean Jackson looks like his old self in Philly camp. Currently ranked 44th in dynasty ranks, Jackson may be a tad undervalued at this point. The hope is to be a regular WR3 with a WR2 as his ceiling.
  • Second year receiver T.Y. Hilton says the game is slowing down for him. After a good pre-season opener, Hilton is in prime position to succeed this year and in the future with Andrew Luck at quarterback and Reggie Wayne close to retirement. Grab Hilton if he’s available.
  • Second year tight end Ladarius Green is looking good in San Diego. With Antonio Gates at 33, Green is in a prime position to take over the starting role but will need to have a good season.
  • Rookie tight end Gavin Escobar has been quiet so far in Dallas.  So far, he grades out as the worst blocking tight end this pre-season, according to Pro Football Focus. Not exactly a recipe for success. Escobar is no more than a taxi squad candidate at this point. He’d be even more valuable if Jason Witten is on your roster.
  • Third year receiver Jon Baldwin dropped a couple of passes during practice Sunday and has yet to stand out in Kansas City’s camp. It’s not inconceivable to imagine this might be Baldwin’s last chance to validate his first round status. Andy Reid does like to throw it around so Baldwin will have his chance.

Daily Dynasty Update – August 9th

It’s Friday. Which means you can do nothing but dynasty cheat sheets tonight. Let’s  get it on:

  • Tom Brady is feasting. Despite the massive turnover in receivers, Brady is still as locked in as ever. He’ll drop in dynasty league drafts but sure things are hard to come by. Don’t sleep on Brady. Plus, I think they’ll have to carry Brady off the field before he retires.
  • Oakland receiver Denarius Moore has been inconsistent in camp so far. Coach Dennis Allen even went as far as to say Oakland doesn’t have that ‘go-to’ guy. Yikes.
  • 8th overall pick Tavon Austin has looked excellent in Rams camp. It still remains to be seen exactly how he’ll be used but he’s sure to be involved. Also keep in mind that former Jet OC Brian Schottenheimer is now in St. Louis. The Jets didn’t exactly fling the ball around.
  • I take back any concern I had about Zach Ertz. He’s been lining up wide, making some great catches and showing why some teams thought he was the best tight end in the draft. Initially, it wasn’t clear where Ertz would wind up behind incumbent Brent Celek and free agent James Casey but locals are predicting he leads the position in catches.
  • Keenan Allen has yet to distinguish himself as a possible replacement at receiver in San Diego. Currently a later round pick, exhibition games will be the real test. Temper your expectations accordingly.
  • Rookie receiver Marcus Wheaton is doing all the right things in Pittsburgh camp. He’s going over the middle for catches a la Hines Ward. Combine that with his speed and Wheaton is a great prospect in dynasty leagues. Draft accordingly.
  • Ryan Broyles is a go in Detroit despite sitting out practice. A two-time ACL tear victim, Broyles is extremely fragile long-term but his position as the receiver opposite of Calvin Johnson in the most pass-happy offense in the NFL can’t be ignored. He’s worth a flyer and could be a tradeable asset down the road.
  • Maquise Goodwin has been better than advertised in his first camp in Buffalo. We looked at Goodwin in-depth. Goodwin didn’t get much action in college at Texas but his 4.27 40-time made people take notice. He’s been working in the slot at out wide and catching absolute bombs. Goodwin is one of our favorite late round flyers for your taxi squad.
  • Rookie linebacker Sio Moore is currently the starter in Oakland. He’ll be on the strong-side. Currently at 42 in dynasty linebacker rankings, he can be bumped up.
