Dynasty Recap – Week 2 – Bengals 24, Chargers 19

Bengals

  • Quarterback Andy Dalton threw for just 214 yards but three touchdowns. Dalton is one of the rare touchdown-depending quarterbacks and will always be a QB2 in dynasty rankings.
  • Running back Gio Bernard had 123 rushing yards on 20 carries after filling in for starter Jeremy Hill. Bernard still has value as a RB3 in PPR league whether Hill is injured or not.
  • Tight end Tyler Eifert continues his breakout season with four catches for 49 yards and a touchdown. He’s already at TE1 in dynasty rankings but could elevate top-tier by the end of the season.

Chargers

  • Quarterback Philip Rivers had a decent day with 241 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. It’s low-end QB1 numbers.
  • Rookie running back Melvin Gordon had 88 yards on 16 carries which is a lot more like it. He’ll continue to be the first and second down back so his production could be limited by lack of touchdown opportunities.
  • Meanwhile, Danny Woodhead had six catches for 68 yards 36 on the ground. It remains to be seen if his role will be affected by Antonio Gates absence but, if not, Woodhead will continue to be a RB2/3 in PPR dynasty rankings.

  • New addition to the top five with Jeremy Hill sneaking in. Le’Veon Bell, Eddie Lacy, Jamaal Charles, and Todd Gurley stay the same.
  • Biggest risers include Chris Ivory to 32nd from 43rd; Matt Jones to 40th from 54th as one of the most promising rookies; Joseph Randle to 41st from 53rd which might be high with the recent trade of Christine Michael; Alfred Blue to 49th from 58th as Arian Foster continues to get injured; Panthers rookies Cameron Artis-Payne to 54th from 63rd; Danny Woodhead to 55th from 64th after healing from a season-ending injury; Bills rookie Karlos Williams to 58th as LeSean McCoy’s primary backup now; and Colts rookie Josh Robinson up to 60th now that he’s Frank Gore’s primary backup.
  • Biggest drops this month include Vikings running back Jerick McKinnon down from 30th to 38th thanks to the return of Adrian Peterson; Joique Bell from 33rd to 42nd thanks to the emergency of Ameer Abdullah; new Titans running back Terrance West 39th to 52nd; and Ravens rookie Buck Allen from 48th to 57th after showing nothing in the pre-season among others.

  • murrayNew top five member this month with DeMarco Murray sneaking in at five. The top four remain the same with LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, Eddie Lacy, and Gio Bernard. Doug Martin drops from four to eight.
  • Big risers this month include Mark Ingram to 33rd from 40th; Knile Davis to 44th from 52nd; and Ahmad Bradshaw sneaking up to 52nd.
  • Big drops include Adrian Peterson to 16th from 6th; Toby Gerhart from 30th to 37th; Maurice Jones-Drew to 50th from 42nd; Danny Woodhead to 53rd from 47th; Jonathan Stewart to 54th from 48th; Pierre Thomas to 55th from 49th; and Marcus Lattimore to 57th from 43rd.
  • Rookie movers include Carlos Hyde up to 18th from 23rd; Jeremy Hill to 29th from 35th; Isaiah Crowell to 40th from 57th; Jerick McKinnon to 41st from 54th; and Andre Williams to 42nd from 51st.

Updated Dynasty Running Back Rankings – March 2014

  • Top five has a slightly different order but the same players: LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, Eddie Lacy now at 3, Adrian Peterson now at 4, and Doug Martin dropping to 5.
  • The risers this month include Bernard Pierce, David Wilson, Latavius Murray, Rashad Jennings, and LeGarrette Blount. Pierce’s rise is inherently tied to Ray Rice‘s fall. Rice’s production dropped off a cliff last year and an off-season domestic assault incident doesn’t help. Wilson looks as healthy as he has in a while and there is optimism he’ll pick up where he left off as the primary back in New York. Murray ad Jennings, The two Oakland backs, now have a clear path to a more prominent role now that the Raiders are letting Darren McFadden walk. Blount’s rise will only prove accurate if he sticks in New England where coach Bill Belichick got the absolute most out of him.
  • Drops this month include Maurice Jones-Drew, Darren Sproles, Danny Woodhead, Rashard Mendenhall, and Fred Jackson. Jones-Drew’s impending free agency, and where he signs, are resulting in his fall as he’s most likely done as a featured back. Sproles, recently released by the Saints, looked bad down the stretch and, at 32, still struggle to find a similar situation as he had in New Orleans. Woodhead’s play also tailed off at the end of 2013 but his value in PPR dynasty leagues should be higher. Mendenhall looks set to retire. And finally, add another year to Fred Jackson who, at 33, is officially the oldest running back on the list. His only value is if you need to win this year.

  • The top five remains the same with Rodgers, Luck, Brees, Newton, and Stafford. Luck did gain some ground though.
  • The Nick Foles rise has finally settled in at #10. I think you could do a lot worse with Foles as your QB1 in dynasty leagues.
  • Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is the other big riser going up to 14th from 17th. Rivers found his touch again and has some exciting new weapons in Keenan Allen and Danny Woodhead. It will be interesting to see how he does with the recent departure of offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.
  • Giants quarterback Eli Manning continues his downward slide to 19th from 15th. He will be losing receiver Hakeem Nicks in the off-season and has little-to-no running game for protection.

Dynasty Recap – Week 15 – Chargers upset Broncos

  • Chargers running back Ryan Mathews had a season-high 127 yards rushing and a touchdown. Mathews has stayed healthy this year and it’s paid off, already eclipsing 1,000 yards. He’ll never be a three-down back with Danny Woodhead in the fold but he can be productive.
  • Chargers rookie receiver Keenan Allen had only two catches but both were for touchdowns. He’s easily been the top rookie receiver and should hope Ken Whisenhunt sticks around as offensive coordinator.
  • Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan had 10 more tackles to give him 114 on the year. He’ll be just 24 entering next year and should continue to be as productive for the foreseeable future.

Dynasty Recap – Week 9 – Redskins edge Charger, 30-24

  • Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers continues his renaissance with 341 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Rivers doesn’t have as many years left as others but he’s still a decent QB2 option.
  • Chargers rookie receiver Keenan Allen continues to impress with eight catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. He’s quickly gaining WR1 status in dynasty circles.
  • Chargers running back Danny Woodhead had nine catches for 77 yards to go along with 21 yards rushing. He’s just entering his Darren Sproles phase and should be a viable option in PPR dynasty leagues for 2-3 years.
  • On the other side of the field, Alfred Morris racked up 121 yards with a touchdown. He’s still one of the few workhorse backs left in the entire NFL and should be for awhile.
  • Redskins receiver Pierre Garçon had a huge day, solidifying his WR2 status in dynasty leagues. Garçon is set up to be successful for at least 3-5 years with the current roster.

Week 3 Dynasty Recap – Titans escape Chargers, 20-17

  • Titans quarterback Jake Locker turned in a sneaky good performance with almost 300 yards and a touchdown. He completed over 60% of his passes and had 8.0+ YPA. Just 25, Locker may make a suitable QB2 for dynasty league owners or a trade chip with stock that will never be higher.
  • The Titans receivers took advantage of Locker’s big day with Kendall Wright hauling in 6/71 and Nate Washington grabbing 8/131. These two are also sell-high candidates.
  • Kenny Britt, meanwhile, was nowhere to be heard from. He caught zero passes on five targets.
  • On the Chargers side, Danny Woodhead is filling his role of a poor man’s Darren Sproles nicely with 31 yards rushing on top of seven catches for 55 yards. If you’re in a PPR dynasty league, Woodhead is a fine RB3. His name isn’t sexy so you may be able to get him on the cheap.
  • Unfortunately, it looks like the Philip Rivers show had to end sometime. Rivers was efficient, going 20 of 24 for 184 yards. However, the Chargers offense only ran 53 plays with San Diego splitting it down the middle between the pass and run. Rivers just isn’t a long-term option in dynasty fantasy circles.
