Dynasty Recap – Week 1 – Chiefs 27, Texans 20

Chiefs

  • At long last, tight end Travis Kelce was cut loose, piling up 106 yards on six catches and two touchdowns. It’s reasonable to firmly place Kelce as the second best dynasty tight end behind Gronk.
  • The man getting him the ball also had a good day with quarterback Alex Smith going 22 of 33 for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Smith will never sniff QB1 territory but could be a serviceable QB2.
  • Running back Jamaal Charles had a decent day by his standards with 57 yards on the ground but five catches for 46 yards and a touchdown in the air. He’s still a solid RB1 in dynasty rankings, especially PPR.
  • Linebacker Derrick Johnson had a big day with eight tackles, a pass defended and a sack. The middle linebacker is a safe LB1 in IDP dynasty leagues.

Texans

  • Thanks to being behind big, the receiving game was the big fantasy beneficiary with DeAndre Hopkins going off for nine catches and 98 yards plus two touchdowns. This could be the norm for Hopkins but makes have a low-end dynasty WR1.
  • The other stud for the Texans did it again with defensive end J.J. Watt racking up nine tackles and two sacks. He’s IDP’s #1 player no matter the format.

Dynasty Recap – Week 12 – Raiders upset Chiefs 24-20

  • Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith had another decent day with 234 yards passing and two touchdowns. That’s about the ceiling for Alex Smith going forward.
  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles had a big day as he’s prone to do. He reeled off 80 yards rushing plus four catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. He should continue to be dynasties top running back.
  • On the other side of the field, Raiders running back Latavius Murray broke out with 112 rushing yards on just four carries with two touchdowns.
  • Raiders linebacker Sio Moore had a big day with 12 tackles and a sack and continues to have a good season. He should be part of a good, young defense in Oakland as a LB2/3.

Dynasty Recap – Week 9 – Chiefs Jets, 24-10

  • Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith had a decent day with 199 yards passing and two touchdowns. Smith will never be better than a low-end QB2.
  • Jets receiver Percy Harvin had a big day with 11 catches for 129 yards on 13 targets. If this was indicative of things to come, Harvin could finally break out unlike anytime when he was in Seattle.
  • The other Jets receiver, Eric Decker had nine catches for 63 yards and a touchdown. Decker has quietly had a solid season and should benefit from a new quarterback in New York next year.
  • Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston had two more sacks to add to his league-leading total and is on pace to break the all-time record. He continues to be a LB2 with LB1 upside.

Updated Dynasty Quarterback Rankings – May 2014

  • bridgewaterNo changes in the top five. It goes Rodgers, Luck, Newton, Stafford, Brees. 
  • Rookies entering the rankings for the first time include Teddy Bridgewater at 14; Blake Bortles at 15; Johnny Manziel at 19; and Derek Carr at 25. So none are quite QB1’s yet but could be serviceable QB2’s. For now.
  • The inevitable fallout includes Eli Manning from 22nd to 27th; Alex Smith from 24th to 29th; Mike Glennon from 25th to 31st; Mike Vick from 30th to 36th; and Brian Hoyer from 32nd to 37th. A lot of it is age except for Glennon who suddenly had competition in Josh McCown.

Dynasty Recap – Wild Card – Colts stun Chiefs, 45-44

  • Both quarterbacks went off as Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith went 30 of 46 for 378 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. This game, and season, bought him at least one more year as the Kansas City starter.
  • Meanwhile, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck went 29 of 45 for for 443 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Admittedly, most of it was in garbage time and against the Chiefs second stringers, but it’s what Luck dynasty owners like to see.
  • The real star yesterday was Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton who had 13 catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns. It remains to see what his role will be next year but there’s no denying his talent. He’s a strong dynasty prospect heading in to 2014.
  • Meanwhile, Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe had his best game all year with eight catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. Don’t be fooled though as Kansas City is still a run-first offense and Bowe will only be a year older next year.
  • Kansas City linebacker Justin Houston had a sack in his return from injury. Houston is a big-play linebacker with low tackle numbers but potentially big sack numbers.

Dynasty Recap – Week 15 – Chiefs blow up Raiders, 56-31

  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles exploded for, possibly, the best fantasy day by any player this year. He only rushed for 20 yards and a touchdown but caught eight passes for 195 yards and four more touchdowns. It’s a battle between Charles and McCoy for top running back in dynasty.
  • Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith had a good day too, thanks to Charles. He went 17 of 20 for 287 yards and five touchdowns. Smith is an excellent game manager and is productive when there’s talent like Charles around him.
  • Raiders running back Rashad Jennings returned to action with 91 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. It remains to be seen if Jennings will return to Oakland but, if he does, will be a viable RB2 option in dynasty leagues.

Dynasty Recap – Week 14 – Chiefs destroy Redskins, 45-10

  • Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith put together a decent game, going 14 0f 20 for 137 yards, two touchdowns and zero turnovers. Smith certainly isn’t a flashy option but you could do worse for a QB2. Worse like…
  • Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III! RG3 went 12 of 26 for 164 yards, a touchdown and an interception. RG3 is having a tough year and complications with coach Mike Shanahan aren’t helping. He might be a buy-low candidate.
  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles ran wild for 151 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. He’ll challenge LeSean McCoy as dynasty’s top running back heading in to 2014.
  • Redskins receiver Pierre Garçon drew 12 targets and hauled in five of them for 37 yards. Garçon will still be a viable WR2 option for a few years being the top option in Washington, no matter who the quarterback is in 2014.
  • Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali had two more sacks, giving him 11 on the year. Hali has quietly put together a solid campaign with 42 tackles, the previously-mentioned 11 sacks, four forced fumbles, an interception and a pass defended on the season. Hali is 30 but with his salary due to come down in 2014, he should be in the Chiefs plans for the foreseeable future.

Week 3 Dynasty Recap – Chiefs over Eagles 26-16

  • The studs did what they were supposed to do. LeSean McCoy had 150 yards rushing for Philadelphia, solidifying himself as one of the few workhorse backs left in the league.
  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles had 170 total yards to go along with seven catches. As long as Alex Smith is the Chiefs quarterback, expect a lot of check downs to Charles.
  • In a battle of young, catch-first tight ends, Travis Kelce (injured) of Kansas City and Zach Ertz of Philadelphia (one reception) continued to disappoint. Would be a good time to buy-low on either.
  • Mychal Kendricks continues to be a tackle machine, racking up nine. Still just 22, Kendricks could be your lead tackle linebacker for a long time.
  • Kansas City linebacker Justin Houston had a monster game with 4.5 sacks. Houston, 24, isn’t exactly new on the scene as he had 10 sacks last year.
