Would you grade Le’Veon Bell for Victor Cruz and the 6th overall pick this year?

In our latest running back rankings, we have Bell checking in #11. Bell started his rookie season injured but ended up playing 13 games. He was highly productive in the passing game with 45 catches for 400 yards and a 8.9 YPC average. However, the running game was a little less productive, gaining just 3.5 YPC on 244 attempts. Now, that could be due to a 24th ranked offensive line in run blocking or Bell’s inability to find the gap but either way, it wasn’t good. Now, Bell is only 22 and has talent around him to draw defensive attention away and will still be a productive back. But I think there’s more value on the other side.

Victor Cruz is currently ranked #15 in our dynasty rankings and is trending downwards. However, there’s a lot of reasons to be excited about Cruz heading in to 2014 and beyond. Cruz is now the primary weapon in the Giants offense now that Hakeem Nicks isn’t expected back. His contract dispute behind him, Cruz will be ready to at the beginning of training camp and will be just 27 heading in to the season.

But what really makes this trade for Anthony is the sixth pick in the upcoming draft, a draft Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said was the deepest in 30 years. With 2-3 elite tight end prospects, 3-4 elite receiver prospects and a handful of quarterback and running back prospects, you’re guaranteed to get a difference maker with that 6th pick. Not looking at the rest of your roster, adding Cruz plus that pick is a good return for a player at the most replaceable position in dynasty football. I say do it.

  • The top five remains unchanged with Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, Drew Brees, Cam Newton, and Matt Stafford. 
  • Biggest drop was Matt Ryan but that’s more to do with the rise of Peyton Manning, Colin Kaepernick, and Nick Foles. The Falcons will be a hot pick for bounce back team of the year.
  • The biggest riser was Ryan Mallett of the Patriots. Tom Brady is a year older and Mallett is still there. It only figures that he’s the quarterback of the future.

  • Seahawks running back Christine Michael is expected to have a bigger role in 2014. Michael was a popular choice in rookie dynasty drafts last year but totaled only 18 carries his rookie year. That should change which will only enhance Michael’s value.
  • Free agent receiver Danario Alexander is dealing with major complications from knee surgery. It’s a shame for the 25-year old as he was high on a lot of dynasty lists even heading in to last year. It’s safe to drop Alexander for the time being.
  • The NFL suspended free agent tight end Fred Davis indefinitely for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. It’s very possible Davis has reached the end of the line which means it’s safe to drop him from your dynasty rankings.
  • Look for the Jets to draft a receiver thanks to their belief that physical freak Stephen Hill can’t contribute in the NFL. Hill’s upside has always vastly outweighed his production.
  • 49ers receiver Quinton Patton is expected to be a starter with the team by the time his rookie contract runs out in 2016. With several mock drafts pegging the 49ers to take a receiver, it’s hard to see where Patton would fit in but if you have a taxi squad, Patton is ideal.
  • The Steelers are expected to re-sign Jerricho Cotchery but not Emmanuel Sanders, meaning 2013 draft pick Markus Wheaton should step in to a starting role. Wheaton’s rookie season didn’t start off well after suffering an injury but with Sanders likely moving on, 2014 could be a break out year.

  • Texans receiver Andre Johnson feels fine after a wrist injury and plans on playing a few more years. Normally, I would be against acquiring a 33-year old that’s not a quarterback but Johnson has shown, time and again, he can keep up as the years go on. While no longer a WR1, he’d be a fine WR2 for your dynasty team.
  • The Raiders could trade Terrelle Pryor before the 2014 season. While it doesn’t make a ton of sense, getting out of Oakland would greatly increase Pryor’s value. It’s clear he won’t get playing time in Oakland and could use a fresh start.
  • Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo should be good to go for OTA’s after back surgery. Romo is still an elite talent and is on the low-end of a Tier 1 quarterback list.
  • Retired tight end Tony Gonzalez recently took a job with CBS, effectively ending his career. I still wouldn’t be surprised if he latched on with a team later in the season but this most likely means Gonzalez is done.
  • Redskins tight end Jordan Reed is healed from an in-season concussion after a long recovery. While Reed is an elite talent and could eventually join the top five of dynasty tight ends, the concussion, and long recovery time, is a major concern. I would be hesitant to pull the trigger on a major deal with Reed in your dynasty league.

  • Free agent receiver Andre Roberts might not be back in Arizona which could be good or bad. Good in that he could earn a starting role somewhere else. But bad because he might not be in a pass-oriented offense like the one in Arizona and still might not be a starter. Roberts dynasty relevancy is fading.
  • Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis should be back in Jacksonville and, should the Jaguars draft a quarterback as they’re expected to do, have his best year in a while. Lewis is still only a TE2 in any format but in a league where tight ends are becoming increasingly valuable, Lewis could be a decent buy-low candidate.
  • Free agent Jared Allen is expected to convert to a situational pass rusher after dominating the position for so long. It doesn’t mean Allen can’t still be effective in the sacks department but his value in dynasty has been sapped. If you haven’t considered trading on his name, now is the time.

  • No changes to the top five with Calvin Johnson, A.J. Green, Dez Bryant, Josh Gordon, and Demaryius Thomas. Nothing should change this group of top-tier receivers any time soon.
  • A big drop includes Giants receiver Victor Cruz, still recovering from a knee scope. The drop is nothing to worry about as Cruz will be the top receiver in New York now that Hakeem Nicks is a free agent. Another drop is Baltimore’s Torrey Smith. Luckily for Smith, he has Gary Kubiak as a new offensive coordinator who oversaw big seasons from his own #1 receiver, Andre Johnson. However, with Dennis Pitta and the Ravens far apart on contract talks, the lack of support in the Ravens passing game can only hinder Smith.
  • Rising this month is Cowboys receiver Terrance Williams. With current second receiver Miles Austin on his way out, it will be Williams jobs to lose. Some others include newcomers to the list, Colts receiver Da’Rick Rogers and Eagles free agent Riley Cooper. Of  the two, Rogers has more potential as he has an elite talent throwing him the ball and, hopefully, a more pass-oriented offense. Cooper, meanwhile, is a free agent and it’s anybody’s guess as to where he ends up.

“Should I give up Gio and Flacco to get Russell Wilson, Arian Foster, Stevie Johnson, Shonn Greene, Dennis Johnson, and #14 pick in this years deep draft.

Never a fan giving up the best player in a deal but this one I’ll admit has me scratching my head…

.5 PPR, 12 team, and my team is capable of winning now. Eli and Flacco are my only current QB’s, Stevie would be my WR4, Greene and Johnson would have roster spots on my squad also. Your thoughts with limited info?”

While I tend to agree with your assessment of not wanting to give up the best player, I think this might actually be worth it. Let’s break it down by position:

  • Getting back Russell Wilson is a huge upgrade over Joe Flacco. At just 25, Wilson is still reaching his prime and is surrounded by good, young talent. Flacco just turned 29 and, while he’s surrounded by talent as well, is now under a run-first offensive coordinator. And I don’t believe the difference between upgrading to Russell Wilson from Joe Flacco is superseded by the downgrade of…
  • Giovani Bernard to Arian Foster. Bernard is a 22-year old coming off a rookie season in which he had over 1,000 total yards and 50 catches. He should take on an even bigger role going forward and could be a top five running back in dynasty leagues for at least a few years. But running back is one of the most replaceable positions in football, both dynasty and in the NFL. And it’s not like you’re getting scraps in exchange as you’ll be getting an Arian Foster that’s still at the top of the Houston depth chart. Adding his backup in Dennis Johnson means you’re trading for an entire team’s running game instead of just one player. Adding Shonn Greene is fine for depth but his addition is inconsequential.
  • Adding Steve Johnson is not a bad addition either, especially if he makes it as your fourth receiver in a 12-team league. However, be sure to temper your expectations as he’s already 27 and the Bills have a couple good, young options behind him in Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin. He also is likely to be cut after 2014 when the Bills could save over $8 million.
  • However, I think this trade still favors you thanks to that 14th overall pick. This year has an extremely deep draft in several positions including quarterback, receiver, and tight end. Adding that extra pick could allow you to take a young running back to replace Bernard while still adding a young skill position player.

There you have it. Without that draft pick I might reconsider but adding a potential difference maker, in addition to upgrading your quarterback position, makes this trade work to your advantage.
