Updated Dynasty Running Back Rankings – March 2014

  • Top five has a slightly different order but the same players: LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, Eddie Lacy now at 3, Adrian Peterson now at 4, and Doug Martin dropping to 5.
  • The risers this month include Bernard Pierce, David Wilson, Latavius Murray, Rashad Jennings, and LeGarrette Blount. Pierce’s rise is inherently tied to Ray Rice‘s fall. Rice’s production dropped off a cliff last year and an off-season domestic assault incident doesn’t help. Wilson looks as healthy as he has in a while and there is optimism he’ll pick up where he left off as the primary back in New York. Murray ad Jennings, The two Oakland backs, now have a clear path to a more prominent role now that the Raiders are letting Darren McFadden walk. Blount’s rise will only prove accurate if he sticks in New England where coach Bill Belichick got the absolute most out of him.
  • Drops this month include Maurice Jones-Drew, Darren Sproles, Danny Woodhead, Rashard Mendenhall, and Fred Jackson. Jones-Drew’s impending free agency, and where he signs, are resulting in his fall as he’s most likely done as a featured back. Sproles, recently released by the Saints, looked bad down the stretch and, at 32, still struggle to find a similar situation as he had in New Orleans. Woodhead’s play also tailed off at the end of 2013 but his value in PPR dynasty leagues should be higher. Mendenhall looks set to retire. And finally, add another year to Fred Jackson who, at 33, is officially the oldest running back on the list. His only value is if you need to win this year.

  • Top seven remains the same with LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, Doug Martin, Eddie Lacy, Adrian Peterson, Giovani Bernard, and Matt Forte. 
  • The big risers this month include Denver running back Montee Ball. With it becoming increasingly unlikely that Denver brings back incumbent Knowshon Moreno, it will be Ball’s job to lose. Another riser includes Oakland running back Latavius Murray. Currently at the top of the Oakland depth chart now that both Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings are free agents, Murray is 6′ 3″, 223 pounds, and ran a 4.38 40 in the combine last year. Murray could be special.
  • The big drops include the previously mentioned Moreno along with the previously mentioned McFadden. It also includes BenJarvus Green-Ellis of the Bengals. With Giovani Bernard expected to shoulder more of the load in 2014, BJGE’s role is going to diminish further.

Dynasty Recap – Week 16 – Chargers beat up Raiders, 26-13

  • Chargers running back Ryan Mathews continues his solid year with 99 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown. He also added three catches for 20 yards. Mathews will be an interesting dynasty asset next year as he’ll be back in San Diego but can he stay healthy?
  • Raiders running back Rashad Jennings had a solid day with 45 yards on 10 carries. He also added three catches for 27 yards. Jennings has earned a starting job this year but you never know what the brain trust is thinking in Oakland for next year.
  • Raiders receiver Andre Holmes continues to grind away, leading the team in targets with eight, catches with five, and yards with 71. Holmes was a great combine prospect and would be best served with decent quarterback play.

Dynasty Recap – Week 15 – Chiefs blow up Raiders, 56-31

  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles exploded for, possibly, the best fantasy day by any player this year. He only rushed for 20 yards and a touchdown but caught eight passes for 195 yards and four more touchdowns. It’s a battle between Charles and McCoy for top running back in dynasty.
  • Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith had a good day too, thanks to Charles. He went 17 of 20 for 287 yards and five touchdowns. Smith is an excellent game manager and is productive when there’s talent like Charles around him.
  • Raiders running back Rashad Jennings returned to action with 91 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. It remains to be seen if Jennings will return to Oakland but, if he does, will be a viable RB2 option in dynasty leagues.

  • Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is back as the starter, dashing the hopes of saavy Josh McCown owners. Currently, they’re about equal in dynasty rankings as neither is guaranteed to come back to Chicago. Cutler has the leg up since he’ll surely sign on as a starter somewhere. McCown could as well for a team drafting a young quarterback in need of a tutor.
  • The stars are lining up for Da’Rick Rogers as Colts receiver LaVon Brazill isn’t practicing and is in a walking boot. Rogers will have little competition for targets and should be owned in all dynasty leagues if he’s still available.
  • Seahawks receiver Percy Harvin still isn’t over his hip issues and it’s fair to wonder if he’ll even be back this season. Seattle has done well without him and they could keep it going while getting Harvin healthy for 2014. He’ll be on plenty of fantasy radars next year.
  • Raiders running back Marcel Reece will be relegated to the backup role with Rashad Jennings returns. Reece was re-signed in 2013 but not to be a featured back.
  • Packers receiver Randall Cobb has been cleared to run but don’t expect him back this year. The Packers should focus on getting healthy for 2014.

Dynasty Recap – Week 12 – Titans slip by Raiders, 23-19

  • The Titans passing game went off with, not one but, two receivers with over 100 yards. Rookie Justin Hunter and second-year receiver Kendall Wright each had six catches for 100+ yards and a touchdown. Those stat lines bode well for both and are a hopeful sign that whoever the Titans quarterback is next season, they’ll have the weapons to be successful.
  • Raiders running back Rashad Jennings continued to impress with 73 yards on the ground on only 16 carries for a 4.6 YPC. He added four catches for 49 yards. While Jennings is already 28 and a free agent after the season, it wouldn’t be surprising for him to pop up somewhere and contribute in 2014. 
  • Raiders linebacker Nick Roach filled the stat sheet with 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a tackle for a loss and a forced fumble. While the first year in Oakland for Roach was supposed to be a tad more productive, he’ll still get opportunities playing in the middle. The Raiders signed him, on the cheap, to a four-year deal in the off-season so he won’t be going anywhere.

  • 49ers rookie running back Marcus Lattimore has been cleared to practice. He won’t play in 2013 but it’s encouraging progress heading in 2014. Lattimore is a strong dynasty prospect in every sense of the word.
  • Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will be 100% healthy before the Eagles next game with Arizona. However, it’s hard to imagine Vick usurping Nick Foles at this point. Vick is almost at the point of being droppable. 
  • Raiders running back Rashad Jennings will still be involved with the offense when incumbent Darren McFadden comes back. Neither are strong dynasty players and both are free agents after 2013. Expect the Raiders to either re-sign McFadden at a bargain or move on.
  • Patriots running back Stevan Ridley lost another fumble Monday night. However, he was still in the game for a handful of plays after and was not completely in the dog house. I’d be nervous this off-season as a Ridley owner. You never know what the brain trust in New England is thinking.

Dynasty Recap – Week 10 – Giants escape Raiders, 24-20

  • Giants running back Andre Brown had 115 yards rushing on 30 carries, solidifying his every down role with David Wilson out. Brown should be owned in dynasty circles with Wilson’s long-term health up in the air.
  • Raiders running back Rashad Jennings had an impressive 88 yards on 20 carries for a 4.4 YPC. He won’t be an option long-term but one might be able to trade him this year for an asset.
  • Raiders rookie linebacker Sio Moore had his best game of the year with nine tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.
  • Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his first sack since the season opener. His play has diminished all year and you have to wonder if he can return to form. Hopefully he can regain his value.

Dynasty Recap – Week 9 – Eagles obliterate Raiders, 49-20

  • Eagles quarterback Nick Foles did some very good things, throwing for seven touchdowns and 406 yards on just 28 pass attempts for a ridiculous 14.5 YPA. While it would be nice to keep that pace up, fantasy owners should be happy to have half that. But with more play like that, Foles should lock up the job for 2014 and beyond. Stay tuned.
  • In a hopeful sign, Eagles rookie tight end Zach Ertz tied for the team lead with six targets and hauled in five catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. Let’s hope this is the kickstart of Ertz’s promising career.
  • Raiders backup running back Rashad Jennings had a big day with 102 yards rushing on 15 carries and seven catches for 74 yards. Jennings should be a fine addition for the rest of 2013 but shouldn’t be considered for next year unless the Raiders foolishly continue on with Darren McFadden.
  • Eagles linebacker Mychal Kendricks had a productive day with 10 tackles and a sack. It’s the second game in a row with double-digit tackles.
