Updated Dynasty Running Back Rankings – January 2014, 2.0

  • Nothing new at the top. LeSean McCoy and Jamaal Charles will be your consensus 1-2 dynasty running backs heading in to 2014. 
  • A slight drop for Alfred Morris from 11th to 13th, possibly due to concerns with new coach Jay Gruden’s offense. Morris is probably not an RB1 in dynasty leagues but is an ideal RB2. 
  • Other drops include Darren McFadden from 23rd to 26th. There’s a lot of uncertainty with McFadden heading in 2014 – injuries, free agency, etc. There’s also BenJarvus Green-Ellis from Cincinnati who will take an even bigger back seat to Giovani Bernard. 
  • The biggest riser (again) is Cardinals running back Andre Ellington from 31st to 23rd. Ellington could be a RB1 in dynasty leagues when (if) he takes the reins.

  • The top two remain the same as the Eagles LeSean McCoy takes the top spot with Jamaal Charles of the chiefs not far behind.
  • After that, rookies are making the most noise with the Packers Eddie Lacy shooting up to 4th from 10th. He proved he could carry the load in Aaron Rodgers absence. The Rams Zac Stacy enters the top ten after bursting on the scene halfway through the season. He’ll be the lead back in St. Louis in 2014. The Steelers Le’Veon Bell also moved up to 13th from 17th. He might be the focal point of Pittsburgh’s offense next season.
  • The big drops include the Ravens Ray Rice dropping from 8th to 14th largely due to his steep production drop this season. The hope is this season is an anomaly for Rice and not the norm. Colts running back Trent Richardson continues his fall from 12th to 17th. Don’t expect that to be the end for Richardson as I predict he’ll drop even further as the off-season goes on. Lions running back Reggie Bush also had a drop thanks to late season injuries and backup Joique Bell‘s emergence as a solid contributor.

  • The top four remain the same with LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, Adrian Peterson and Doug Martin. Shouldn’t be much change in the 2014 dynasty running back rankings either.
  • The biggest riser this month were rookies Giovani Bernard (5) of Cincinnati and Zac Stacy (20) of the Rams along with New England pass specialist Shane Vereen (16). Both rookies were solid contributors all year and should have even more success in 2014 with more opportunities and earlier playing time. Vereen, with a whole year under his belt, should be a PPR monster.
  • The drop continues to include Trent Richardson (12) who should be even lower heading in to 2014. Easily the year’s biggest disappointment.

Dynasty Recap – Week 16 – Colts beat up on Chiefs, 23-7

  • Colts quarterback Andrew Luck looked a little like his old self, going 26 of 37 for 241 yards and a touchdown. Hopefully Luck can continue the positive play before heading in to 2014.
  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles continues his fantasy MVP season with 106 rushing yards on only 13 carries added 38 yards receiving on five catches. He also added a touchdown. Charles is a top five player in any fantasy league.
  • Colts running back Trent Richardson – 16 carries. 43 yards. 2.7 YPC. He’s just not good at running the ball. His lone redeeming quality lately is his pass catching ability. Today he caught three for 15 yards but that won’t be enough to warrant a dynasty roster spot.

Dynasty Recap – Week 15 – Chiefs blow up Raiders, 56-31

  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles exploded for, possibly, the best fantasy day by any player this year. He only rushed for 20 yards and a touchdown but caught eight passes for 195 yards and four more touchdowns. It’s a battle between Charles and McCoy for top running back in dynasty.
  • Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith had a good day too, thanks to Charles. He went 17 of 20 for 287 yards and five touchdowns. Smith is an excellent game manager and is productive when there’s talent like Charles around him.
  • Raiders running back Rashad Jennings returned to action with 91 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. It remains to be seen if Jennings will return to Oakland but, if he does, will be a viable RB2 option in dynasty leagues.

Dynasty Recap – Week 14 – Chiefs destroy Redskins, 45-10

  • Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith put together a decent game, going 14 0f 20 for 137 yards, two touchdowns and zero turnovers. Smith certainly isn’t a flashy option but you could do worse for a QB2. Worse like…
  • Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III! RG3 went 12 of 26 for 164 yards, a touchdown and an interception. RG3 is having a tough year and complications with coach Mike Shanahan aren’t helping. He might be a buy-low candidate.
  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles ran wild for 151 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. He’ll challenge LeSean McCoy as dynasty’s top running back heading in to 2014.
  • Redskins receiver Pierre Garçon drew 12 targets and hauled in five of them for 37 yards. Garçon will still be a viable WR2 option for a few years being the top option in Washington, no matter who the quarterback is in 2014.
  • Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali had two more sacks, giving him 11 on the year. Hali has quietly put together a solid campaign with 42 tackles, the previously-mentioned 11 sacks, four forced fumbles, an interception and a pass defended on the season. Hali is 30 but with his salary due to come down in 2014, he should be in the Chiefs plans for the foreseeable future.

Dynasty Recap – Week 12 – Chargers outlast Chiefs, 41-38

  • Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers had an outstanding day, going 27 of 39 for 392 yards and three touchdowns and zero turnovers. Rivers continues his renaissance connecting on 71% of his passes and an 8+ YPA. You could do worse with your QB2 this year and beyond.
  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles continued his efficient play with 115 yards on just 14 carries, two touchdowns and added four catches for 42 yards. Charles is close to being the top-rated running back in dynasty circles.
  • Chargers rookie receiver Keenan Allen continued his successful rookie season with nine catches for 124 yards. He’ll be viewed as a WR2 going forward.
  • Chiefs defensive back Eric Berry had a solid outing with eight tackles, a pass defended and a sack. He’ll continue to be a DB1.

Dynasty Recap – Week 9 – Chiefs beat Bills, 23-13

  • Bills running back C.J. Spiller finally showed flashes of what he’s capable of with 116 yards rushing on 12 carries. He added two receptions for 39 yards. Spiller is still capable of being a RB1 when healthy.
  • The same could be said for Jamaal Charles with 90 yards rushing and six catches.
  • Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe had seven catches for 67 yards. I can’t imagine that kind of line to last with Alex Smith at quarterback. Continue to hold Bowe at bay until he a) changes teams or b) KC makes a quarterback change.
  • Bills rookie linebacker Kiko Alonso had eight tackles to go along with a sack and two tackles for a loss. He might be the next Luke Kuechly. See what it would take to own him in your dynasty league.

Daily Dynasty Update – October 18th

  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles might be getting the ball more if that’s possible. While this is great news for 2013, keep an eye on Charles in the near future to make sure the tread doesn’t completely wear off those tires.
  • Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez stated he’s not asking for a trade. However, I’m sure Gonzalez didn’t envision the Falcons getting off to a 1-4 start which would lead one to believe he might give it another go. I’d be buying low on Gonzalez right now. Even if it’s for the last half of a season, he’s a top five tight end option and more so with Julio Jones out for the year.
  • The Texans will start Case Keenum at quarterback Sunday. If Keenum can show anything against the Chiefs, don’t be surprised if Matt Schaub is permanently benched. Schaub has little to no value in dynasty circles anymore.
  • Eagles quarterback Mike Vick is out again, giving Nick Foles another audition. It’s very possible Foles could be the starter going forward with another good showing. He threw for three touchdowns last week in a win over Tampa.
