Updated Dynasty Tight End Rankings – March 2014

Click here for updated dynasty tight end rankings.

  • Top five is a consensus now with Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski, Julius Thomas, Jordan Cameron, and Vernon Davis.
  • A moderate riser this month is Cowboys tight end Gavin Escobar. Jason Witten is a year older and the cap-strapped Cowboys can’t bring in better options in the receiving game.
  • Fallers this month include Coby Fleener of the Colts. Until the Colts show a willingness to unleash the passing game, no tight end in that Indy offense is a safe bet. Another drop is Brandon Bostick of the Packers. Jermichael Finley could still come back but until the team officially anoints Bostick the heir apparent, he can’t be considered a sure thing.

  • Tight end Garrett Graham is supposed to a be a hot commodity, especially between Houston and Green Bay. It’ll hurt the young tight end on that roster (either Houston’s Ryan Griffin or Green Bay’s Brandon Bostick) but will help the tight end on the team Graham leaves.
  • Brandon Pettigrew is expected to hit free agency after starting his career in Detroit. The Lions should be in the market for an upgrade as Pettigrew has been a big disappointment in his career. Whether it’s through the draft or free agency, the new Detroit tight end will be one to watch.
  • The Steelers hit linebacker Jason Worilds with the transition tag which means they can match any offer a team makes to the free agent. If he leaves, expect LaMarr Woodley to stay. If Worilds stays, expect Woodley to go.

  • More Green Bay tight end news as the Packers are inching closer to not resigning Jermichael Finley. Him and Andrew Quarless are free agents, leaving Brandon Bostick as next in line. Assuming the Packers don’t draft or sign a higher profile tight end, it’s Bostick’s job to lose.
  • Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee has yet to be cleared from his neck injury, another troubling sign for the promising linebacker. It’s getting to the point where Lee just gets injured way too much to be reliable. His value could be viewed as either good or bad, depending on your dynasty league.
  • Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is expected to get a ton of playing time next year and is a better receiver than any other tight end on  the current roster. Kelce could be a buy-low candidate with the group of tight ends entering the 2014 NFL draft.

  • No big shakes in the top five – Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski, Julius Thomas, Jordan Cameron, and Vernon Davis are all there. These rankings should hold barring significant injury news on Gronk.
  • The big risers this month include Tim Wright from Tampa Bay, Delanie Walker from Tennessee, Brandon Bostick from Green Bay, and Mychal Rivera from Oakland. With the exception of Walker, all are young and are expected to see even more action in 2014. Bostick would be the guy that most leagues shouldn’t know about quite yet so get him if you can.
  • The big drops include Jared Cook of the Rams, Antonio Gates from San Diego, Brandon Pettigrew, who is set to be a free agent, Fred Davis, also set to be a free agent, and the ‘retiring’ Tony Gonzalez. Cook just fell off a cliff after a promising season opener. The Rams are expected to add even more weapons, diminishing Cook’s role. Brandon Pettigrew has had all the opportunity in the world with Detroit’s high-octane attack but hasn’t produced. Chances are low he’ll suddenly break out on another team. Fred Davis hasn’t produce since his breakout year  three years ago. Now rankings are taking in to account Tony Gonzalez’ retirement. But I won’t believe it until I see it. If you can snag Gonzalez for a late round pick in your draft, or something equivalent, do it.

Daily Dynasty Update – January 23rd

  • Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is set for groin surgery today. It’ll be the third straight off-season Peterson has gone under the knife but, as we’ve seen the last two years, it doesn’t seem to faze him. He’ll be ready for camp.
  • Expect the Giants to have a more up-tempo offense with new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. This points the arrow up for Eli, and anyone else in the Giants offense, in 2014 and beyond.
  • Expect more out of Zach Ertz in 2014 and beyond as he’ll have full camps and pre-seasons to get in a groove.
  • The Packers will give Brandon Bostick a look at tight end this off-season. His game is similar to incumbent Jermichael Finley’s with his athleticism and speed. Any tight end in that offense is worth a look. Bostick is young and if he has any ability to hold on to the ball, he’ll be an upgrade on Finley. Get him now if you can.
  • The Ravens will not re-sign tight end Ed Dickson who has been a major disappointment in dynasty circles. He entered the 2012 season as the starter only to see Dennis Pitta emerge. Then had a golden opportunity to bounce back after Pitta’s injury before the 2013 season only to see Baltimore sign re-tread Dallas Clark. Dickson’s days of contributing to your fantasy team are over.
  • The same will be said for Santonio Holmes of the Jets. Holmes has been an even bigger disappointment than Dickson where he was often injured and had his four lowest yardage seasons while in New York. Fun fact: not one of his seasons in New York was better than any of his four in Pittsburgh. Avoid in your dynasty leagues.
