- Giants running back David Wilson now has his neck brace off after surgery. It’s good news for Wilson but dynasty owners are still in a holding pattern. Wilson’s availability right now is a complete question mark.
- New Browns coach Mike Pettine is a fan of quarterback Brian Hoyer. At the very least, Hoyer will enter the season as one of the better backup prospects in all of football. It’s even possible the Browns take a project at QB and allow Hoyer the starting job one more year.
- In an interesting stat, Texans quarterback Case Keenum lost more yards per sack than any other quarterback in the league. Keenum is not the long-term answer at quarterback for the Texans who are widely expected to draft one in May with the first overall pick.
- The Frank Gore contract with San Francisco is finally becoming an issue with Gore due $6 million next year at age 31. Even an amateur Madden player in Franchise mode would know that is too much for a 31-year old. It shouldn’t be an issue as Gore is expected back next year but his days are numbered as a reliable fantasy back. Trade him now and look for Kendall Hunter and Marcus Lattimore to get more looks in 2014 no matter what.

Updated Dynasty Wide Receiver Rankings – January 2014, 2.0

- A new entry in the top five with Josh Gordon at #4. Gordon did a lot with little to work with on offense so anything should be an upgrade in 2014.
- You can certainly see a trend in the biggest risers: the Bears Alshon Jeffery is up to 9th from 15th; Steeler Antonio Brown is up to 11th from 14th; Chargers rookie Keenan Allen makes the biggest leap to 15th from 24th; and the Vikings Cordarrelle Patterson to 17th from 21st. All are under the age of 26.
- Drops include the Seahawks Percy Harvin from 9th to 12th primarily because he can’t seem to get on the field; Bucs Vincent Jackson goes from 20th to 26th since Lovie Smith was hired as coach; the enigma Hakeem Nicks drops from 23rd to 29th and could fall further depending on where he signs.
Daily Dynasty Update – January 23rd
- Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is set for groin surgery today. It’ll be the third straight off-season Peterson has gone under the knife but, as we’ve seen the last two years, it doesn’t seem to faze him. He’ll be ready for camp.
- Expect the Giants to have a more up-tempo offense with new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. This points the arrow up for Eli, and anyone else in the Giants offense, in 2014 and beyond.
- Expect more out of Zach Ertz in 2014 and beyond as he’ll have full camps and pre-seasons to get in a groove.
- The Packers will give Brandon Bostick a look at tight end this off-season. His game is similar to incumbent Jermichael Finley’s with his athleticism and speed. Any tight end in that offense is worth a look. Bostick is young and if he has any ability to hold on to the ball, he’ll be an upgrade on Finley. Get him now if you can.
- The Ravens will not re-sign tight end Ed Dickson who has been a major disappointment in dynasty circles. He entered the 2012 season as the starter only to see Dennis Pitta emerge. Then had a golden opportunity to bounce back after Pitta’s injury before the 2013 season only to see Baltimore sign re-tread Dallas Clark. Dickson’s days of contributing to your fantasy team are over.
- The same will be said for Santonio Holmes of the Jets. Holmes has been an even bigger disappointment than Dickson where he was often injured and had his four lowest yardage seasons while in New York. Fun fact: not one of his seasons in New York was better than any of his four in Pittsburgh. Avoid in your dynasty leagues.
Daily Dynasty Update – January 22nd
- Vikings receiver Cordarrelle Patterson is penciled in as the starter for 2014 and many years to come, possibly as the next Percy Harvin. His stock will be sky-high around dynasty drat time thanks to that and new offensive coordinator Norv Turner.
- Colts receiver Reggie Wayne will begin a new phase of his rehab by including straight-line runs. Wayne was seriously injured halfway though the year last year but could be had on the cheap in most dynasty leagues if you’re looking for a WR3 for a year or two.
- Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew will, most likely, test the free agent market. In related news, the Lions will probably upgrade the position. Pettigrew was one of the most promising tight end prospects for years thanks to the high-powered Detroit offense but never took advantage.
- Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez apparently wont’ have to look hard to find work should he be a cap casualty. For Sanchez dynasty owners, there’s a glimmer of hope.
- Recently ‘retired’ Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride suggested tight end Brandon Myers might be better suited as a reserve. For Myers dynasty owners – abort! abort!

- Nothing new at the top. LeSean McCoy and Jamaal Charles will be your consensus 1-2 dynasty running backs heading in to 2014.
- A slight drop for Alfred Morris from 11th to 13th, possibly due to concerns with new coach Jay Gruden’s offense. Morris is probably not an RB1 in dynasty leagues but is an ideal RB2.
- Other drops include Darren McFadden from 23rd to 26th. There’s a lot of uncertainty with McFadden heading in 2014 – injuries, free agency, etc. There’s also BenJarvus Green-Ellis from Cincinnati who will take an even bigger back seat to Giovani Bernard.
- The biggest riser (again) is Cardinals running back Andre Ellington from 31st to 23rd. Ellington could be a RB1 in dynasty leagues when (if) he takes the reins.
Daily Dynasty Update – January 21st
- Falcons receiver Julio Jones is scheduled to be ready before training camp. That’s good news as Julio continues to be rated as a top-ten WR in dynasty leagues. He must stay healthy to stay there.
- Patriots quarterback Tom Brady would like to see Julian Edelman back with the team in 2014. Dynasty owners of the free agent would to. New England is the only place where Edelman will retain his WR1 value in PPR dynasty leagues.
- Look for the Bears to upgrade on Michael Bush at running back in the off-season. While initially, it may seem like a bad move for Matt Forte owners to have a more capable backup, it may lead to Forte lasting longer.
- The Bills will hire a quarterbacks coach for the 2014 season in an effort to further along E.J. Manual’s progress. The Bills rolled without one last which was just one of the many issues the Bills offense had. The Chargers and Ken Whisenhunt are a good example of what happens when you hire a good offensive mind.

- We have a new top five with Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski (injuries aside), new #3 Julius Thomas, Jordan Cameron, and Vernon Davis rounding it out.
- Next up on the list is now second-year Washington tight end Jordan Reed, making a big leap from ninth to sixth. Other big risers include fellow second-year tight end Ladarius Green (from 16th to 11th) who will, presumably, take on a bigger role in San Diego next year. Also be on the lookout for Philadelphia’s Zach Ertz (from 22nd to 16th) who had three of his four biggest yardage games in the last five games of the season. Ertz has more talent than any other tight end on the Eagles roster and should be utilized more.
- Dropping this time is Packers tight end Jermichael Finley from 14th to 18th due to the questions about his health and where he’ll end up next season. Other drops include the Giants Brandon Myers, who possibly had the most disappointing fantasy season in the tight end category, and Washington’s Fred Davis who was unseated by the previously mentioned Reed. Neither one shows bounce-back potential in 2014.

Dynasty Recap – NFC Championship – Seahawks escape 49ers, 23-17
- 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick showed the good, the bad, and the ugly with 153 yards passing, one touchdown, two interceptions, 130 yards rushing and a fumble. Filled the stat sheet quite a bit but left fantasy folks more frustrated than ever before. Right now, it’s hard to give Kaepernick a QB1 grade until he can string good performances together.
- Meanwhile, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson had another day at the office, going 16 of 25 for 215 yards and a touchdown. If Kaepernick is the hare, Wilson is the tortoise.
- Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch ran wild (again) with 109 yards on 22 carries. Lynch will be in his age-28 season next year when, typically, running backs start breaking down. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to start fielding offers for Lynch in your dynasty leagues and sell high.
- 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman was on his way to a spectacular game, finishing with 14 tackles and a sack before destroying his knee. The injury looked gruesome and is sure to effect his status heading in to next season. Here’s hoping the recovery goes well.
- Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor had a great game with 11 tackles and two passes defended. He’ll be a solid DB1 heading in to next dynasty season and could make a claim for top DB overall.
Dynasty Recap – AFC Championship – Broncos beat Patriots, 26-16
- Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was incredible, going 32 of 43 for 400 yards, two touchdowns, and zero turnovers. There’s no doubt who the top quarterback in fantasy is and even in dynasty leagues, Manning should be viewed as a top-five QB. You’ll only get 1-2 years from him but it’s hard to ignore that production.
- Patriots receiver Julian Edelman, seemingly the only receiver that did anything decent this year, produced again. He hauled in 10 catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. He finishes the year the team leader in targets, catches, and yards. Tom Brady has already pined for his return. If Edelman is back in New England, he’ll be a borderline WR1 in PPR leagues.
- Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas took advantage of an injured Aqib Talib with seven catches for 134 yards and a touchdown. As long as Manning is his quarterback, Thomas is a bona fide WR1.
