Updated Dynasty Running Back Rankings – July 2014

  • andersonTop five remains the same with LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, Eddie Lacy, Doug Martin and Gio Bernard staying in that order.
  • The big movers this month include Broncos backup C.J. Anderson, who ended last season ahead of Ronnie Hillman, up to 59 after not being ranked; and Browns rookie Isaiah Crowell up to 57 from 62, who moves up after more talk of a committee in Cleveland.
  • The drops this month include Darren Sproles from 51 to 55 after assurances that LeSean will still get his; Kendall Hunter from 59 to 64 after it appears Carlos Hyde is most likely to take over Frank Gore’s carries; and LeGarrettee Blount from 61 to 65.

  • Top five has a slightly different order but the same players: LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, Eddie Lacy now at 3, Adrian Peterson now at 4, and Doug Martin dropping to 5.
  • The risers this month include Bernard Pierce, David Wilson, Latavius Murray, Rashad Jennings, and LeGarrette Blount. Pierce’s rise is inherently tied to Ray Rice‘s fall. Rice’s production dropped off a cliff last year and an off-season domestic assault incident doesn’t help. Wilson looks as healthy as he has in a while and there is optimism he’ll pick up where he left off as the primary back in New York. Murray ad Jennings, The two Oakland backs, now have a clear path to a more prominent role now that the Raiders are letting Darren McFadden walk. Blount’s rise will only prove accurate if he sticks in New England where coach Bill Belichick got the absolute most out of him.
  • Drops this month include Maurice Jones-Drew, Darren Sproles, Danny Woodhead, Rashard Mendenhall, and Fred Jackson. Jones-Drew’s impending free agency, and where he signs, are resulting in his fall as he’s most likely done as a featured back. Sproles, recently released by the Saints, looked bad down the stretch and, at 32, still struggle to find a similar situation as he had in New Orleans. Woodhead’s play also tailed off at the end of 2013 but his value in PPR dynasty leagues should be higher. Mendenhall looks set to retire. And finally, add another year to Fred Jackson who, at 33, is officially the oldest running back on the list. His only value is if you need to win this year.

Dynasty Recap – Divisional Playoff – Patriots blow out Colts, 43-23

  • Colts quarterback Andrew Luck had an interesting night, going 20 of 41 for 331 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions. This game aside, Luck has progressed this season and should only get better. He’ll get receiver Reggie Wayne back along with tight end Dwayne Allen. Couple that with the progress T.Y. Hilton made in the slot and luck is still a top five prospect in dynasty leagues.
  • Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount had a career day with 166 rushing yards and four  touchdowns. Blount will be a free agent this year and is getting hot at the right time. However, one game does not a dynasty prospect make. Don’t overpay for Blount in the off-season as he’s still a one-dimensional back with an uncertain future.
  • Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton was held, mostly, in check with four catches for 103 yards. Even with the Patriots focusing on Hilton he still made things happen. He’ll be an interesting WR2 for next year in dynasty leagues.
  • Patriots receiver Julian Edelman led the team in targets (9), catches (6) and yards (84). Edelman easily became Tom Brady’s favorite target down the stretch and will be interesting to see if the’s re-signed. If so, he’ll be a low-end WR1 in PPR dynasty leagues.

Dynasty Recap – Week 8 – Patriots come back against Dolphins, 27-17

  • The Patriots continue to split carries with Stevan Ridley having 14 against LeGarrette Blount’s 11. The New England running game is one to avoid until there’s some level of consistency.
  • The Dolphins also seem to not notice who the more talented runner is as they had a 2/3 / 1/3 split with their runners. Lamar Miller (luckily) had 18 carries compared to Daniel Thomas’ 9. This is another situation to monitor to insure Miller gets an opportunity at maximizing his value.
  • Dolphins receiver Mike Wallace had three catches even though he led the team with 10 targets. Something is off and until Miami switches gears and institutes a game plan that works better with Wallace’s long-ball skill set, just avoid.
  • Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower had his second solid outing in a row with 10 tackles, a sack and two tackles for a loss. At just 23, Hightower has potential to be a solid LB2/3 for many dynasty years.

Dynasty Recap – Week 5 – Bengals stop Patriots, 13-6

  • Quarterback Tom Brady went without a touchdown pass for the first time in four years. Luckily, it appears Rob Gronkowski will be back this week and all will be right with the world.
  • Running back LeGarrette Blount ran for a respectable 4.3 YPC in his 12 carries for New England. Of course, he also fumbled in the game so don’t be surprised if Stevan Ridley gets another chance to lock down the position.
  • On the other side of the field, Giovani Bernard had 13 carries compared to BenJarvus Green-Ellis’ 19. Dynasty owners can expect the back-and-forth routine this year but Bernard should be good for years to come.
  • Bengals rookie tight end Tyler Eifert saw a career-high seven targets to go along with five catches and 53 yards. The changing of the guard could become official soon so now would be the time to jump on the Eifert bandwagon.
  • Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes had his best game of 2013 with 12 tackles, two tackles for a loss, a pass defended, and an interception. Spikes had a solid 2012 with 92 tackles but that appears to have been his ceiling. I’d sell high on Spikes right now.
