Updated Dynasty Quarterback Rankings – April 2014

  • Top five remains the same but slightly different order. Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, and Cam Newton make up the top three. Drew Brees does drop a bit to five because of age and losing a few reliable weapons.
  • The only other noticeable drop was Tampa quarterback Mike Glennon thanks to the Josh McCown signing. It really doesn’t say a lot when you bring in a better quarterback for the second season of a young quarterback.

  • Slight change at the top as Cam Newton and Drew Brees, switch spots. Your new top five is Rodgers, Luck, Newton, Brees, Stafford. 
  • Your risers include Miami’s Ryan Tannehill, up two spots to 15th. Tannehill got high marks from two of our three sources but, personally, he needs to show something this year to keep this spot. Otherwise, expect Miami to start looking forward.
  • Biggest drop of the month was Eli Manning. Now 33 and losing his (former) #1 receiver, Manning will need to hit the brakes on the downward trend he’s had the last few years. His touchdown totals have gone from 31 to 29 to 26 to 18 over the last four years. The 18 represents his lowest total since his rookie year. Yowza.

  • The top five remains unchanged with Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, Drew Brees, Cam Newton, and Matt Stafford. 
  • Biggest drop was Matt Ryan but that’s more to do with the rise of Peyton Manning, Colin Kaepernick, and Nick Foles. The Falcons will be a hot pick for bounce back team of the year.
  • The biggest riser was Ryan Mallett of the Patriots. Tom Brady is a year older and Mallett is still there. It only figures that he’s the quarterback of the future.

  • Top five is unchanged with Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, Drew Brees, Cam Newton, and Matt Stafford.
  • Eagles quarterback Nick Foles continues to climb, this month to eight. You wouldn’t think Foles stock could go any higher. However, it’s important to remember that Foles was not a Chip Kelly product so it’s not entirely unreasonable to think Kelly will want someone else down the road. But for now, Foles value will never be higher.
  • Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III continues his slide to #11. He’s officially in ‘buy low’ territory and should benefit from a health off-season and a new scheme that’s more pass friendly. 
  • On the other side, Redskins backup Kirk Cousins has moved up to 28th on the heels of RG3’s poor season but I’m not sure why. He had a 52% completion percentage in 2013 and a 4:7 TD:INT ratio. It appears cousins is still living off his rookie season. You shouldn’t though. 

Dynasty Recap – Divisional Playoff – Patriots blow out Colts, 43-23

  • Colts quarterback Andrew Luck had an interesting night, going 20 of 41 for 331 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions. This game aside, Luck has progressed this season and should only get better. He’ll get receiver Reggie Wayne back along with tight end Dwayne Allen. Couple that with the progress T.Y. Hilton made in the slot and luck is still a top five prospect in dynasty leagues.
  • Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount had a career day with 166 rushing yards and four  touchdowns. Blount will be a free agent this year and is getting hot at the right time. However, one game does not a dynasty prospect make. Don’t overpay for Blount in the off-season as he’s still a one-dimensional back with an uncertain future.
  • Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton was held, mostly, in check with four catches for 103 yards. Even with the Patriots focusing on Hilton he still made things happen. He’ll be an interesting WR2 for next year in dynasty leagues.
  • Patriots receiver Julian Edelman led the team in targets (9), catches (6) and yards (84). Edelman easily became Tom Brady’s favorite target down the stretch and will be interesting to see if the’s re-signed. If so, he’ll be a low-end WR1 in PPR dynasty leagues.

  • No major changes in the first dozen. Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, and Andrew Luck still make up the top three.
  • The big riser continues to be Nick Foles who is now up to #13. Looking at the 12 ahead of him, it makes sense. Jay Cutler also moves up a bit thanks to his new contract which insures he’ll be surrounded by top-notch talent for a bit.
  • The drops continue for Eli Manning who will have a new offensive coordinator next year. Keep an eye out for that one. Terrelle Pryor also drops thanks to the likelihood that Oakland drafts a quarterback with their first pick.

Dynasty Recap – Wild Card – Colts stun Chiefs, 45-44

  • Both quarterbacks went off as Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith went 30 of 46 for 378 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. This game, and season, bought him at least one more year as the Kansas City starter.
  • Meanwhile, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck went 29 of 45 for for 443 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Admittedly, most of it was in garbage time and against the Chiefs second stringers, but it’s what Luck dynasty owners like to see.
  • The real star yesterday was Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton who had 13 catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns. It remains to see what his role will be next year but there’s no denying his talent. He’s a strong dynasty prospect heading in to 2014.
  • Meanwhile, Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe had his best game all year with eight catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. Don’t be fooled though as Kansas City is still a run-first offense and Bowe will only be a year older next year.
  • Kansas City linebacker Justin Houston had a sack in his return from injury. Houston is a big-play linebacker with low tackle numbers but potentially big sack numbers.

Dynasty Recap – Week 17 – Colts beat up Jaguars, 30-10

  • Colts quarterback Andrew Luck went 26 of 37 for 282 yards and a touchdown and no interceptions to cap off a nice stretch at the end of the season. He’ll be a top five dynasty quarterback heading in to 2014 but could still be a buy-low candidate.
  • Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton went off for 11 catches for 155 yards, showcasing what fantasy owners hoped for every game. Hilton’s situation will be one to monitor in Indianapolis in the off-season along with the return of Reggie Wayne.
  • Colts linebacker Robert Mathis had two more sacks to give him the NFL lead with 19.5. While Mathis will be 33 before the 2014 season, he’s signed relatively cheaply and should be back to be a LB2/3 in dynasty circles.

Dynasty Recap – Week 16 – Colts beat up on Chiefs, 23-7

  • Colts quarterback Andrew Luck looked a little like his old self, going 26 of 37 for 241 yards and a touchdown. Hopefully Luck can continue the positive play before heading in to 2014.
  • Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles continues his fantasy MVP season with 106 rushing yards on only 13 carries added 38 yards receiving on five catches. He also added a touchdown. Charles is a top five player in any fantasy league.
  • Colts running back Trent Richardson – 16 carries. 43 yards. 2.7 YPC. He’s just not good at running the ball. His lone redeeming quality lately is his pass catching ability. Today he caught three for 15 yards but that won’t be enough to warrant a dynasty roster spot.

Dynasty Recap – Week 15 – Colts destroy Texans, 25-3

  • Colts quarterback Andrew Luck had another uneven day, going 19 of 32 for only 180 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. While Luck has cut down on the turnovers, he’s not exactly lighting the world on fire. If anything, it might be time to buy-low.
  • Texans running back Ben Tate had a decent day gaining 72 yards on 16 carries for a 4.5 YPC. He added three catches for 20 yards. Houston fell behind early which eliminated the running game. Tate should sign somewhere else next year where he’ll finally have the opportunity to carry the load.
  • With Colts incumbent running back Donald Brown got injured, Trent Richardson was forced back in. He had 64 carries on 19 carries for a very Trent Richardson-esque 3.4 YPC. He did add 38 yards on four catches but Richardson is what he is.
  • Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton busted out (a little) with eight catches for 78 yards on 12 targets. The talk before the game was of Da’Rick Rogers but all Rogers did was open up the secondary for Hilton. Hilton is the long-term solution.
