Dynasty Impact – Buffalo Bills select Sammy Watkins, WR

watkinsDynasty Impact: After trading up, the Bills got their man in the best wide receiver in the draft with Sammy Watkins. Not only showing a commitment to help E.J. Manual, Sammy Watkins is the best receiving prospect since Julio Jones, and provides the Bills with another playmaker alongside C.J. Spiller. He’ll start right away and, provided Manual can keep progressing, should be grabbed early in rookie dynasty drafts. Manual’s stock should also soar heading into 2014 dynasty leagues. Worst case scenario is the Bills dump Manual after not cutting it and getting another one for Watkins to catch passes from. Either way, Watkins will be a valuable commodity in 2014 dynasty drafts.

Dynasty Impact – Jacksonville Jaguars select Blake Bortles, QB

bortlesDynasty Impact: Bortles is the most raw of the top quarterback prospects this year but could, potentially, be the best. At 6′ 5″ and 232-pounds, Bortles is a huge player but still needs some refinement in his foot work and will need to learn how to play to NFL competition after playing at small school Central Florida. He’ll most likely sit for a year behind starter Chad Henne but should be handed the reins in 2015. Now, as to whether he’ll have the weapons to succeed is another story. Nonetheless, he’s a lottery ticket that could pay off. For dynasty purposes, he’s an ideal quarterback to draft for your taxi squad.

Dynasty Impact: St. Louis Rams selects Greg Robinson, OT

NCAA Football: Auburn at Louisiana StateDynasty Impact: A mauler of a left tackle, Robinson will be an immediate upgrade in run protection for the Rams. Slated to start the season at left guard to open his career, Robinson will eventually take over the left tackle position. This will bode extremely well for incumbent running back Zac Stacy with the Rams playing in a tough division full of top defenses. A potential Pro Bowler, the 6′ 5″, 332-pounder will also provide some much-needed protection for quarterback Sam Bradford or whoever ends up being the quarterback long-term. Robinson is also surprisingly quick with a sub-5.00 40-time at the combine. Still young and will need some coaching but will be a fantastic tool for all the Rams specialists.

Houston Texans – Jadeveon Clowney – DL

clowneyDynasty Impact: With the first overall pick, the Texans select Jadeveon Clowney and create a terrifying duo of pass rushers. There was a little mystery as to who Houston would pick but it ended up being the safest pick all along.

Whether as an end or a rush linebacker, Clowney won’t draw nearly as much attention thanks to J.J. Watt lining up on the other end. For IDP-ers, if he does end up at end, Clowney is the most celebrated end to come out since Julius Peppers. From sheer talent, Clowney should be good for double-digit sacks on a regular basis. He should be taken pretty high in rookie dynasty IDP drafts.

Your Dynasty Questions Answered, Part IV

Another question, this time about the value of a pick in dynasty rookie drafts against a proven commodity. Don’t forget to send your questions to dynastyfantasyfootballcentral(at)gmail.com. Chris says:
“Unique format – 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE, 3 FLEX. 12-team full point PPR. To me this format is all about having quality WR depth. Would you give up the #3 pick in this years rookie draft for Torrey Smith? I have a roster that is able to win now and in favor of making the deal but would like another opinion.”
That is a tough call. Just going off of that information, I’d be inclined to do that trade as well. While this draft has a ton of depth at nearly every position, there are no slam dunk prospects such as Andrew Luck a few years ago. You’ll still be able to get quality talent in later rounds even at the receiver position. Rotoworld recently had a great piece on the second-tier of receivers in this years draft who all will most likely be available in the second and third rounds.
For Smith, he’s still just 25 so it’s not as if you’re trading for a 30-something receiver. He set career highs with 65 catches and over 1,100 yards this year while being the only effective Baltimore offensive weapon which, subsequently, forced defenses to focus more on covering him. Should Baltimore upgrade at the opposite receiver position or along the offensive line so they allow less than three sacks a game, Smith’s value with only increase.
At the end of the day, built to win or not, getting Torrey Smith for the third overall is worth it.

Dynasty Recap – Senior Bowl – South beats North, 20-10

  • San Jose State quarterback David Fales had the best game of any signal caller, going six of seven for 104 yards and a touchdown with his lone incompletion resulting in an interception. Fales performance will help his chances of breaking in the second tier of quarterbacks in the 2014 draft, both NFL and dynasty.
  • Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr didn’t do anything to drop his ranking, going 7/11 for 45 yards and a touchdown. Currently Carr looks like the fourth quarterback taken in the draft.
  • Colorado State tight end Crockett Gillmore led all receivers with five catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. Currently Gillmore is slated to be picked in the fourth round or later thanks to a deep tight end class.
  • Auburn defensive end Dee Ford had another great outing with two more sacks. Ford’s stock has shot up in recent weeks thanks to a dominating performance in the national championship game and should be considered a first round pick in the 2014 NF draft.
