Houston Texans – Jadeveon Clowney – DL

clowneyDynasty Impact: With the first overall pick, the Texans select Jadeveon Clowney and create a terrifying duo of pass rushers. There was a little mystery as to who Houston would pick but it ended up being the safest pick all along.

Whether as an end or a rush linebacker, Clowney won’t draw nearly as much attention thanks to J.J. Watt lining up on the other end. For IDP-ers, if he does end up at end, Clowney is the most celebrated end to come out since Julius Peppers. From sheer talent, Clowney should be good for double-digit sacks on a regular basis. He should be taken pretty high in rookie dynasty IDP drafts.

  • bellLions running back Joique Bell is nursing a knee injury but there are no indications it’s significant. He remains on track to split carries with Reggie Bush and could possibly be the long-term solution.
  • Jaguars receiver Justin Blackmon shouldn’t be counted on for 2014. Blackmon was a highly rated receiver in dynasty drafts just two years ago but his behavior keeps getting in the way. Still might be a decent buy-low candidate if you have a taxi squad.
  • Texans receiver Andre Johnson didn’t show up to the first day of mini-camp but they are just voluntary. There’s been no indication of injury or a contract dispute so you can still count on Johnson as a WR2 in dynasty circles.

  • petersonVikings running back Adrian Peterson says he’s at 80%. There’s a long way to go until the season starts and no one should doubt AP’s ability to recover from his groin injury but he’s also 29 and will have to break down at some point. Be cautious.
  • Eli Manning should be back to 100% before the season starts but is entering a make-or-break year in fantasy and real life. The Giants added running back Rashad Jennings and will probably add more targets during the draft.
  • With recent indications that the Bucs will draft a quarterback early, its assumed that Mike Glennon is not long for Tampa. Although as someone pointed out, it’s not like Glennon had a bad rookie year.

  • shortsJaguars receiver Cecil Shorts is entering a contract year after two average seasons as a starter. Shoddy quarterback play can partially be to blame but he should have no issues this year as Jacksonville is expected to draft one in the early rounds. Just 26, Shorts is still a dynasty buy for me.
  • Lions running back Mikel Leshoure is skipping workouts in the hopes of getting out of Detroit. He’s a clear #3 on the depth chart and is hoping to catch on a #2 somewhere else. Chances are slim that happens.
  • Cowboys running back Lance Dunbar is ready to go for 2014 as DeMarco Murray’s backup. Murray has a spotty injury history so it’s likely Dunbar will see some significant playing time, if he can stay healthy himself.
