Updated Dynasty Quarterback Rankings – February 2014, 2.0

  • The top five remains unchanged with Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, Drew Brees, Cam Newton, and Matt Stafford. 
  • Biggest drop was Matt Ryan but that’s more to do with the rise of Peyton Manning, Colin Kaepernick, and Nick Foles. The Falcons will be a hot pick for bounce back team of the year.
  • The biggest riser was Ryan Mallett of the Patriots. Tom Brady is a year older and Mallett is still there. It only figures that he’s the quarterback of the future.

  • Top five is unchanged with Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, Drew Brees, Cam Newton, and Matt Stafford.
  • Eagles quarterback Nick Foles continues to climb, this month to eight. You wouldn’t think Foles stock could go any higher. However, it’s important to remember that Foles was not a Chip Kelly product so it’s not entirely unreasonable to think Kelly will want someone else down the road. But for now, Foles value will never be higher.
  • Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III continues his slide to #11. He’s officially in ‘buy low’ territory and should benefit from a health off-season and a new scheme that’s more pass friendly. 
  • On the other side, Redskins backup Kirk Cousins has moved up to 28th on the heels of RG3’s poor season but I’m not sure why. He had a 52% completion percentage in 2013 and a 4:7 TD:INT ratio. It appears cousins is still living off his rookie season. You shouldn’t though. 

Dynasty Recap – Divisional Playoffs – Seahawks beat Saints, 23-15

  • Saints quarterback Drew Brees wasn’t quite as efficient as he usually is during the regular season. Brees went 24 of 43 for 309 yards and one touchdown. The low completion percentage further enhances the perception that Brees isn’t a fantasy stud outside a domed environment. Luckily, he has at least nine games a year in a dome between his eight home games and a road game at Atlanta. He’s still a top three dynasty quarterback for the foreseeable future.
  • Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch ran wild, going off for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Lynch is signed for at least two more years in Seattle and should be a RB1 in that timeframe. 
  • Saints receiver Marques Colston had a big day with 11 catches for 144 yards and a touchdown. Colston will never be a sexy pick, and certainly shouldn’t be relied on as your WR1 or even WR2. But as the second option in the pass-heavy Saints offense, you could do much worse as your WR3.
  • The Seahawks safety duo of Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas had a combined 25 tackles and four passes defended. Both are DB1’s heading in to 2014 dynasty seasons.

  • No major changes in the first dozen. Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, and Andrew Luck still make up the top three.
  • The big riser continues to be Nick Foles who is now up to #13. Looking at the 12 ahead of him, it makes sense. Jay Cutler also moves up a bit thanks to his new contract which insures he’ll be surrounded by top-notch talent for a bit.
  • The drops continue for Eli Manning who will have a new offensive coordinator next year. Keep an eye out for that one. Terrelle Pryor also drops thanks to the likelihood that Oakland drafts a quarterback with their first pick.

Dynasty Recap – Wild Card – Saints escape Eagle, 26-24

  • Saints quarterback Drew Brees had a very average day, going 20 of 30 for 250 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Brees goes up against Seattle next week. This game does nothing to dispel the notion that Brees can’t put up his usual numbers outside of a dome.
  • Eagles quarterback Nick Foles had another efficient day, going 23 of 33 for 195 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. He’ll be a QB1 in dynasty circles heading in to next season.
  • Saints running back Mark Ingram picked up the slack with 97 rushing yards and a touchdown. Ingram is eligible to be cut before next season but games like this will help him stick around.
  • Eagles receiver Riley Cooper led the Eagles with six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. The free agent had quite the year with the racial slur controversy in the beginning but found his groove with Foles. It’ll be interesting to see if Philadelphia brings him back.

Dynasty Recap – Week 17 – Saints destroy Buccaneers, 42-17

  • Saints quarterback Drew Brees had an indoor Brees day, going 24 of 31 for 381 yards and four touchdowns. Brees will continue to be a top three dynasty quarterback in 2014.
  • Saints running back Khiry Robinson ran for 50 yards on a season-high 12 carries. Robinson is an intriguing dynasty prospect especially if Mark Ingram doesn’t return.
  • Buccaneers rookie tight end Tim Wright ended 2013 with five catches for 58 yards and a touchdown. Wright has some upside heading in to 2014 after coming out of nowhere to be a reliable option for rookie Mike Glennon.
  • Buccaneers defensive end Adrian Clayborn had an impressive 10 tackles to go along with another sack. Clayborn will be just 26 heading in to 2014 and should be a decent DL2.

Dynasty Recap – Week 16 – Panthers come back against Saints, 17-13

  • Saints quarterback Drew Brees went 30 of 44 for 281 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. This game won’t squash the notion that Brees can’t produce outside the friendly confines of the Super Dome. He’s still a QB1 but don’t expect the world when Brees is on the road.
  • Saints running back Mark Ingram had an ‘up’ day in his up-and-down season. He ran for 83 yards on 13 carries. He has a 4.6 YPC so all is not lost  this season. He’s under contract for one more year to prove himself a viable option in New Orleans.
  • Panthers tight end Greg Olsen led the team in targets and receptions, hauling in four catches on seven targets for 35 yards. Olsen is, without a doubt, Cam Newton’s favorite target this year. If the Panthers ignore the receiving corps (again), Olsen will enter 2014 as a TE1 again.
  • Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly had an incredible 24 tackles and a pass defended. Kuechly has had a sub-par season compared to last year but all that means is he’s a top-ten linebacker in dynasty instead of top-five.

Dynasty Recap – Week 15 – Rams upset Saints, 27-16

  • Even in a loss, Saints quarterback Drew Brees still has good fantasy games going 39 of 56 for 393 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Brees will be a top five quarterback option in dynasty leagues for the foreseeable future.
  • Rams rookie running back Zac Stacy ran wild, taking 28 carries for 133 yards and a touchdown. Stacy is an exciting, young player and should be considered a high-end RB2 heading in to 2014.
  • Rams defensive end Robert Quinn continues his stellar season with two more sacks and a fumble recovery. That’s now 15 sacks on the season to lead the NFC. Quinn will be just 24 heading in to 2014 making him a DL1 in dynasty leagues.

Dynasty Recap – Week 14 – Bears dominate Cowboys, 45-28

  • Bears quarterback Josh McCown continues to impress going 27 of 36 for 348 yards and four touchdowns. It’s probably a stretch to envision McCown taking over the starting job but the Bears have to at least think about it,
  • Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray had 18 carries for 146 yards. He might have had more if Dallas didn’t get blown out. Murray is a legit RB2 in dynasty circles for 2014. Just prepare for the inevitable injury.
  • Meanwhile, Mr. Reliable Matt Forte ran for 102 yards and also caught seven passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. Forte was playing Dallas’ horrible defense  but he’s proven time and again he’s a RB1 in dynasty circles.

Dynasty Recap – Week 14 – Saints destroy Panthers, 31-13

  • Saints quarterback Drew Brees was surgical, going 30 of 42 for 313 yards and four touchdowns. Like Peyton Manning, age is an issue with Brees but could be worth a championship or two in your dynasty leagues.
  • Saints receiver Marques Colston had his best game of the year with nine catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Colston will be 31 next year and is headed to the back-loaded portion of his contract. His value takes a big hit if he doesn’t play in New Orleans. Futhermore, there’s really no consistent receiving option in New Orleans besides Jimmy Graham.
  • Panthers tight end Greg Olsen led the team in targets and receptions with 12 targets, hauling in eight for 40 yards. He seems to be Cam Newton’s primary target. If Carolina should upgrade their receiving position, look for Olsen’s value to take a hit.
